Atha Yoganushasanam – the first sutra.

Patanjali’s first yoga sutra, “Atha yoga anushasanam,” serves as the foundation for the entire yoga philosophy. In just three simple words, Patanjali encapsulates the essence of yoga. “Atha” means “now” or “in the present moment,” signifying that yoga begins when one is ready, right here and right now. “Yoga” means the union of mind, body, and spirit, while “anushasanam” implies discipline or guidance.

This sutra highlights the importance of mindfulness, emphasizing that the journey into yoga should start with a receptive, focused mind. It underscores the notion that yoga is a continuous practice, inviting individuals to embark on their yogic path whenever they are prepared to commit themselves to the pursuit of inner harmony and self-realization.
